Tuesday, July 2nd Kenya

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

We started our day early with breakfast at 7:00am. It was cereal, fried eggs, and bread. After breakfast we met for devotions and prayer – without Gods call we wouldn’t have considered coming – without Gods provision we wouldn’t be here and without His help we wouldn’t make it in the days to come.

While at breakfast we met a man from Minnesota named Mark. He was very helpful with information about the country and even told us about a great coffee shop just around the corner from the Hostel. So, with a little time to spare we took a walk for some great African coffee at the Savanna. And, we weren’t disappointed!

Our driver for our time in Kenya, Matthew, met us at the Floral at 9:00am. And, our guide for the majority of our time in Kenya, Paul, also joined us. He serves as in Kenya with Chariots of Hope and has an incredible passion for helping orphans and children. So, with our luggage loaded and our guide leading us, we started our four-hour drive to Kitui. This road trip included the expected rough roads, crazy traffic, and spectacular views – its not often you see a giraffe roaming freely while driving down the road!

Unfortunately, a couple of our team members suffer from carsickness. Needless to say the roads and driving style of this country was torturous for one if them– puke bag required!

I’m so impressed with this team and their passion to serve here in this country. They are fighting through fears, carsickness, homesickness, and much more to have the opportunity to love on and serve these precious children here in Africa.

And our first opportunity to serve came when we pulled onto the campus of the Kitui Baby Home sponsored by Chariots of Hope.  As soon as our van pulled up to the gate of the home – the children started singing and waving. My heart jumped at their excitement to see us.

As we stepped out of the van the children immediately came to us – arms stretched out – eager for someone to hold them. We spent the next couple of hours doing just that. This is a baby home so 40+ children ranged from birth to six years old. As we held the children we also met the nursemaids and did our best to encourage them. Their daily job is so incredibly difficult, sometimes lasting more than 15 hours. They do the best they can but honestly they are out numbered in most cases. So, our presence and help brings relief to these amazing caregivers. And the children soaked it up.

After spending time with the babies we were invited into the directors office. She talked with us for some time and offered us Kenyan tea and cookies. She was an amazing woman that has been with the home for 17 years.

We journeyed back to the guest home for supper, showers, and much needed rest.

Kenya, Monday - July 1st

Monday, July 1, 2013

Monday – July 1st
We started our day at 4:30 in preparation for our 8:00am flight out of Nairobi to London. We caught an airport shuttle and headed to our terminal at 5:30am. Upon our arrival we learned our flight had been cancelled the night before. For some reason, British Airway did not communicate this news to those who booked tickets on this flight. So, we stood in line for two hours – long hours – to see about the possibility of scheduling another flight to Kenya.

The attendant was very helpful and apologetic of our situation. And, we were able to find a flight for all six of our team members with Delta. This new flight left at 5:00 pm and took us through Zurich, Switzerland.

Almost twelve hours after leaving for JFK airport we were sitting on a plane bound for Zurich. Our journey to Africa was underway! We were tired but so thankful to have this opportunity.

Our layover in Zurich was only a couple of hours - just enough time for me to enjoy a cup of European coffee and pain au chocolate. Amazing!

After the short reprieve – we boarded our flight to Nairobi, Kenya. My hope was to stay awake on this flight to help in getting my body adjusted to the seven-hour time change from the US. Yeah – right! When I woke up the plane was in the air – I didn’t even remember it taking off! I did manage to stay awake the rest of the eight hour flight.

We landed around 6:00pm in Kenya as God was painting the sky with an amazing African sunset. This was my third time in Africa but my first visit to Kenya. We made our way to the Visa purchase counter, picked up our luggage, and then passed through customs without a hitch.

While waiting for our luggage I looked for someone to help us secure a van for the trip to the Flora Hostel – our home for the evening. A very nice customer relation’s lady graciously helped me out with all the details and we were on our way to the Hostel. It was now about 8:00 pm. And, even at this hour the traffic in Nairobi was as bad as any rush hour I had experienced.

The accommodations at the Hostel were simple yet adequate. We each had a restroom and shower in our room and mosquito nets over our beds. The hostel provided free wifi in the courtyard so we all spent about an hour outside touching base with family.

We were in bed by 10:00 – tired but thankful to be in Kenya and anxious to love on children!

Impact Africa Update

Thursday, April 25, 2013

This summer Julie and I have the incredible privilege to lead a team to Africa through America World Adoption Agency. This is the same agency we went through to adopt our youngest daughter Klaire six years ago. Our team will be visiting several orphanages in Kenya and Uganda with the purpose of impacting the lives of these amazing children and their caregivers.

The dates for our trip are June 30th – July 13th.

Currently we have six team members representing three different states, Michigan, Virginia, and Kentucky. And, we would love to have many more. The registration deadline is Tuesday, April 30th. So, please join me in praying for our team to grow.  Some of the orphanages we will visit have hundreds of children. A larger team simply means more children will have the opportunity to be impacted by our ministry.

I currently have five people who are seriously praying about joining and several others who are considering it.

Also, if you don’t mind, please share this ministry opportunity on your facebook page or blog by posting a link to the registration page for this team

Thank you for caring, praying, and helping us spread the word about this amazing opportunity!

Oceans, Catalyst West Coast Moment

Monday, April 22, 2013

This past week I had the privilege to attend Catalyst Leadership Conference in California. I've been to three other Catalyst conferences in the past but this was my first one on the West Coast. And, in true Catalyst fashion I wasn't disappointed  I truly enjoyed my time with our church staff, meeting new friends, being challenged to grow as a pastor/leader, and worship.

There were several moments at Catalyst that left a mark on me. One of those moments came during worship when Joel Houston led us in the song "Oceans." The lyrics reached deep in to my heart and squeezed tightly. I've since purchased the song and downloaded it on my iphone to use during my morning worship time. I hope it speaks to you as well.

"Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)"

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sovereign hand
Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You've never failed and You won't start now

So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior
[x6]

I will call upon Your Name
Keep my eyes above the waves
My soul will rest in Your embrace
I am Yours and You are mine
